Gnutella

When the World Wide Web started. It used to be that I would put up a web page, you would
link to it, and I would link to yours. To get around, we would all "surf the links". The web was
a web.
But shortly after, the likes of Yahoo! and Lycos came on the scene to build search engines, or
information portals. You go to one place to find all the information. Ideally that would be
true. The problem with portals? They stuff you with ads. They are outdated. They basically
control the flow of information. (Proven in a recent IBM/Altavista study of the Internet.)
Now, however, Gnutella puts the personal interaction back into the Internet. When you run a
Gnutella software and connect to the Gnutella Network, you bring with you the information

ICQ 2002a is the latest release of ICQ ("I seek you"), the popular instant-messaging program that lets you communicate with friends and colleagues in real time. To seek out a friend on the ICQ network, simply enter his or her ICQ number, name, nickname, or e-mail address. Once your contact list is set up, you'll be notified when your friends are online so that you can chat; send instant messages, files, and URLs; play games; or just hang out.

ICQ 2002a includes ICQphone, a new feature that incorporates IP telephony functions into the ICQ program. Users can initiate and participate in PC-to-PC and PC-to-phone calls. In addition, users can also utilize SMS technology, send wireless-pager messages, view up-to-date information on ICQ channels, and integrate ICQ with Outlook.

Sie können nicht nur MP3 Dateien mit jedem anderem User austauschen, sondern auch MPEGs, Bilder oder sogar Software. Dabei wird nicht auf einen zentralen Server zugegriffen (wie bei Napster), sondern der Datenaustausch erfolgt direkt von PC zu PC (peer-to-peer). In der Software von Kazaa werden gleich die nötigen Player für die ausgetauschten Dateien mit geliefert. So gibt es z.B ein Theater, wo Sie jedes MPEG-Video gleich nach dem Download oder sogar als eine Art Vorschau bereits während dem Download anschauen können. Ein weiterer Vorteil gegenüber Napster ist, dass man Downloads zu jedem Zeitpunkt abbrechen und beliebig wieder aufnehmen kann.
